Ace Battery Co.
SITE BACKGROUND
The Ace facility operated as a scrap battery recycler specializing in lead-bearing materials from 1967 until 2001. The facility received spent lead-acid batteries from multiple sources including large industrial, automotive, heavy equipment, motorcycle and marine and processed them to reclaim lead for sale to smelters. Prior to Ace's ownership, battery salvage operations occurred at this location beginning in the mid-l940s, and the site was supposedly used as a solid waste landfill in the early 1900s.
Remedial activities consisted of the demolition of several structures, removal of waste debris, stabilization and removal of 7,812 tons of lead-impacted soil, and placement of clay cap. The remedial process was completed in June 2004 in accordance with the IDEM approved RCRA Closure and Work Plan.
